Intersection Column | Saying Goodbye to Kaely Quinn

In 2018, my book Mind Games was released and readers met Kaely Quinn. But what many people don’t know is that Kaely didn’t begin as a carefully planned character. She came to me in a dream. I saw her sitting at a table, having dinner with someone who wasn’t actually there. As she stared at the empty chair across from her, she began to speak, profiling her invisible dinner partner. Little by little, a figure began to take shape. Even in my dream, I knew exactly who she was: an FBI behavioral analyst with a unique and deeply personal way of understanding killers. When I woke up, I couldn’t wait to begin writing her story.

Kaely’s journey continued through three novels, and readers connected with her in a way every author hopes for. She wasn’t just solving crimes, she was carrying the weight of her past, including the fact that her own father had been a notorious serial killer. That inner struggle, paired with her determination to seek justice, made her special to me. Thankfully, it also seemed to resonate with my readers as well.

So, when I began working on my Erin Delaney Mysteries series, I still wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye. With my publisher’s blessing, I brought Kaely back as Erin’s friend and mentor. Together, they faced danger in Shattered Sanctuary and Dark Design. But as I began writing the third and final book in the series, I knew it was finally time to say goodbye.

Letting go of a character like Kaely wasn’t easy. She had become real to me, and I believed she also mattered to my readers. I wanted her final story to be worthy of that connection. It needed to be something filled with tension and danger, but also with purpose. After considering many possibilities (and more than a few “what if” moments), Fatal Finale was born.

In this story, a grieving father sets a chilling plan in motion. He is convinced that his daughter, who was murdered by Kaely’s father many years ago, is now crying out for justice. When Kaely disappears, Erin and those closest to her must race against time to find her, following a series of clues left by a man who has nothing left to lose. As the clock ticks down, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Saying goodbye to beloved characters is something both readers and writers experience. Writers spend a lot of time creating and molding characters that they know will only last a short time. It isn’t easy. And maybe that’s something readers understand more than we realize. We all face moments where we have to let go of something: people, seasons in our lives, and things that once felt like part of who we were. Writing this book reminded me that those endings can be painful, but they can also be meaningful. They can point us forward, even when we’d rather hold on.

Writing Fatal Finale gave me the opportunity to honor Kaely’s journey, along with her strength, her struggles, and her faith. Like many of my characters, she faces darkness, but she doesn’t confront it alone. And in the end, that’s what I want readers to take away. Not just the tension of the story, but the reminder that even in the most desperate situations, God is there. I hope readers will find that her final adventure is one worth remembering.
