Intersection Column | The Story Behind Twilight Tactics

When readers open one of my suspense novels, they expect danger, high stakes, and characters pushed to their limits. Twilight Tactics delivers all of that. But beneath the action, this story grew from convictions and experiences that have shaped both my life and my writing.

I always enjoy sharing the story behind the story, so here’s a glimpse into how this novel came to be.

Twilight Tactics takes place at Broken Chains Ranch, a trauma recovery facility for veterans. It’s meant to be a place of peace, healing, and second chances. Instead, it becomes a war zone.

FBI agent Collin Sullivan brings Ollie Callahan, a foster teen and the sole witness to a mob hit, to the ranch to keep her safe until trial. The ranch was founded by Collin’s cousin, and it seems like the perfect refuge—remote, secure, and surrounded by people who understand trauma.

That sense of safety doesn’t last. Armed attackers surround the property, cutting off communication and turning the ranch into the center of a full-scale siege.

Elena Thompson, a survival expert who teaches wilderness skills at the ranch, helps train Ollie in self-defense. As the attacks escalate, a troubling question surfaces: Are the attackers really after Ollie, or are they hunting Elena, whose past is more complicated than anyone knows?

With enemies who outmatch them technologically and no immediate help coming, Collin and Elena must rely on courage, skill, and faith to keep everyone alive.

Before I wrote novels full time, I worked as a special education teacher. That experience shaped me more deeply than I realized at the time.

In the classroom, I learned to watch people closely—how they communicate, what they avoid saying, and what they need even when they can’t express it. I wore many hats: teacher, counselor, nurse, and constant problem-solver. That training flows straight into my writing. I’m deeply character-driven. I want readers to understand not just what my characters do, but why they do it, especially under stress.

Teaching also trained me to value clarity and structure. I had to break overwhelming tasks into manageable steps for students who struggled to see the big picture. That skill now helps me build layered plots that may be complex, but still clear and satisfying for readers.

And I’ve always loved learning. Research is one of my favorite parts of the writing process. Whether I’m studying law enforcement procedures, survival tactics, or the realities of foster care, I want the world of the story to feel grounded and believable.

This novel wasn’t sparked by one single life event. Instead, it grew from several long-standing passions.

I love ranch settings—the wide-open spaces, the hard work, the deep sense of family and place. I’ve always been fascinated by law enforcement and the courage and sacrifice that job demands. And I have a deep compassion for foster children and kids who’ve had to grow up too fast.

Ollie Callahan, the foster teen in this story, quickly became dear to me. Through her, I wanted to portray both the vulnerability and resilience of kids who have experienced trauma. Writing her story reinforced something I already believed: a stable home and steady, loving adults can change the course of a child’s life.

Broken Chains Ranch becomes both a refuge and a battleground, and that contrast mirrors real life. Healing often happens in community, when people stand together, not just through individual strength.

Writing Twilight Tactics didn’t change who I am so much as it sharpened what was already in my heart.

Spending time in a story that touches on foster care made me even more aware of how much safe homes and committed adults matter in a child’s life. It also made me reflect on ways I might have been more directly involved in fostering when I was younger. Because of our lifestyle and job demands at the time, that wasn’t realistic for our family.

Still, writing this book reminded me that it’s never too late to show up. That might mean supporting foster families, volunteering, advocating, or even telling stories that help readers see vulnerable kids with more compassion.

One Scripture stayed with me as I wrote: Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… When you walk through fire you shall not be burned.”

That promise captures the heart of this novel. The characters face very real danger. The waters are deep. The fire is hot. But they are not alone. No matter what happens, God is present in the struggle.

What I Hope Readers Take Away

First, I hope readers are fully entertained. I want them to feel the tension, flinch at the danger, and cheer when justice rises.

But beyond the suspense, I hope the story leaves readers with hope. Especially for anyone who feels defined by their past or weighed down by regret, I want this book to offer reassurance: God is not limited by where we’ve been or what we’ve done. He can redeem broken stories and bring light out of dark places.

If readers close the book feeling encouraged, seen, and reminded that redemption is always possible, then this story has done its job.
