Discovering the Treasure of Summer Reading with Robin Jones Gunn

Robin thought something seemed odd. It was the summer of 1986, and she and her husband Ross, a youth pastor, had taken a group of adolescents on a camping trip to San Clemente State Beach. The brilliant blue sky and the balmy California breezes were enough to beckon any school-sapped teenager out of their tent and into the surf and sand. But there was one tent that remained occupied.

Wanting to see what was so interesting, Robin peeked inside and saw a group of 13-year-old girls . . . reading. They had about 30 books from the public library, but much to Robin’s surprise, none of the books were suitable for this young audience (or any audience for that matter).
